Flamingo Upholstery upholsters many types of furniture, ranging from antique to modern pieces, dining chairs through to headboards. Every piece is unique. That is what makes upholstery exciting! Some projects need only the top fabric replacing whilst other pieces require a full re-upholstery. Whatever the project, I will discuss with you your wishes and the options. Here you can see a selection of the furniture I upholster.

Choosing fabrics

This is the fun bit! However, choosing the right fabric for your furniture is not always easy as there is so much choice. I have many sample fabric books in my workshop, but you may want to search online too for inspiration. I am happy to help you choose the right fabric for your project! In the meantime, here are a few tips on what to look out for.

How often it gets used

Upholstery fabrics are heavier and more durable than other types of fabric. They come with a Martindale rubtest, which tells you how durable they are. Between 20K -30K is suitable for light use, over 30K is for heavy use.

If it's fire-safe

Fire retardant fabric is a material that resists fire. Some fabrics are sold with fire retardant properties whilst other fabrics need to be treated separately. Natural fabrics, such as wool, are naturally fire retardant.

How easy it is to keep clean

Another consideration is if you would like 'easy-clean' or 'stain-repellent' fabrics. Though these have more chemicals in them, they are ideal for pieces that see a lot of wear.

The look and feel

Last, but not least, decide on what look you want to go for! For example, A woolen fabric will have a very different look and feel to a velvet fabric. Below are some pictures of the various fabric types you can opt for.
